The official presentation of the DOCG Conegliano Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore took place at the illustrious Istituto Cerletti Oenology School in Conegliano, by the vice-president of Regione Veneto, the president of the Consorzio per la Tutela del Prosecco di Conegliano Valdobbiadene DOCG (the related Consortium of Protection) Mr Franco Adami, its director Mr Giancarlo Vettorello and the headmistress of the Istituto Cerletti Oenology School Ms Damiana Tervilli.

The DOCG appellation for the Prosecco of Conegliano Valdobbiadene brings many novelties: first of all, the official State-issued bottle seal assuring the traceability and quality of each bottle, and the establishment of the so-called Rive, that is, a special typology to underline diversity within the same territory.
Mr Adami, president of the Consortium, opened the presentation explaining the novelties introduced by the DOCG appellation: the new production will reach the market in April 2010, guaranteeing more and more quality to consumers thanks to stricter production regulations also including the use of the official State-issued bottle seals with a unique identification number for each bottle, which assure their traceability.

Another novelty is represented by the introduction of the Rive, a typology giving due value to sub-areas in the territory.
The communication plan adopted by the Consortium to spread the new appellation will include shared information to the producers, the participation to Vinitaly and an advertising campaign supported by Regione Veneto.
All these actions were presented by Mr Vettorello, director of the Consortium.

The institutions were represented by the vice-president of Regione Veneto, who highlighted this important period for the Prosecco of Conegliano Valdobbiadene and for all the other Prosecco varieties.
They have been able to join together and reach a common goal: that of protecting the heritage of Prosecco, which became a benchmark for the whole Veneto region.
The DOCG designation will turn into a feature to promote the whole regional territory, due to the synergy established between the product and the area, which evolved into a central issue in institutional communication, as shown at the recent tourism exhibition Bit, in Milan.

The Veneto region should present its characteristics internationally in the best possible way, through its technical, cultural, qualitative and research excellences.
The role of Conegliano Valdobbiadene DOCG will be of paramount importance in displaying Veneto products’ quality to world consumers.
As a matter of fact, Prosecco leads at an international level because it fits any kind of taste.

This is a successful outcome, which, however, must be protected: this is the aim pursued by the new regulations.
Mr Adami underlined the role of Prosecco of Conegliano Valdobbiadene producers in protecting the present heritage and building value for future generations.

This 44th edition of Vinitaly, taking place from 8 to 12 April 2010 at Verona Fair, will be the first official display of DOCG Prosecco Superiore as a forefront standard-bearer for Prosecco, a benchmark for world modern spumanti which can only be grown in the North-East of Italy.

The revolution starting from 2009 vintage closely bound this wine to the territory where it was born and which lead it to success: an “appellation pyramid” was created in which the G standing for Garantita (Guaranteed) represents the vertex, based on the two historical zones of Conegliano Valdobbiadene and Asolo.
In these areas, the DOCG appellation will assure the traceability of Prosecco from vineyards to world consumers’ tables, thus delivering a further added value.

The Istituto Cerletti Oenology School was chosen for this presentation because this institute and Prosecco wine are contemporaries: they were both born in 1876 and have grown up together connecting training, experimentation and market success. This date appears in the new logo created for the production of DOCG Conegliano Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore.

The vice-president of Regione Veneto explained that the institution will actively contribute to spread knowledge about the new Prosecco, the excellent wine consumers are used to know which represents our territory and our culture. It will be sustained on domestic and European markets as well as on international ones, and Prosecco will likely assure its reciprocal support to the region.
No doubts arose related to the choice of a new, inter-regional DOC appellation, in the middle of which the historical zones act as the pace-setter.

Mr Adami explained that there is no fear for the future: the ones who are scared of future are those not sure of their present. This revolution was carried out to give due value to Prosecco, whose successful path is unprecedented in the “sparkling” world.
The DOCG appellation becomes a symbol for the territory, allowing to spread its peculiarities and further information about its micro-areas of production: the so-called Rive, local dialect expression for “hillsides”.
