Producers from five provinces of the Veneto region and four provinces of the Friuli Venezia Giulia region signed the memorandum of association of the Consortium of Protection of DOC Prosecco1, at Treviso Chamber of Commerce.

This new body is aimed to protect, give due value and look after the interests of the new designation, also supervising the whole denomination thus ensuring high standards of quality as required by law.

Members coming from the provinces of Treviso, Veneto, Padua, Belluno, Vicenza and Venice in Veneto, and Pordenone, Gorizia, Udine and Trieste in Friuli are signatories of the memorandum.

During these 3 years of work, the producers were supported by institutions like the Chamber of Commerce, the Province with the alderman Marco Prosdocimo, the Veneto and Friuli Venezia Giulia Regions and the Italian Minister of Agriculture.

Moreover, trade associations as well have been very supportive: Coldiretti, the Unione Agricoltori, Coopagri, the Confederazione Italiana Agricoltori and the group of Unindustria Treviso and Confcooperative Treviso.

The support offered by the Consortia of Protection of the province of Treviso have been precious too.

The Board of Directors of the Consortium of Protection of DOC Prosecco is composed of 21 representatives of the production, bottling and processing phases, 7 for each category.

In the same occasion, Fulvio Brunetta was elected president. Mr. Brunetta is also a member of the chamber committee of Treviso Chamber of Commerce. He will be assisted by two vice-presidents: Giorgio Serena from Conegliano, belonging to the wine bottling sector and responsible for the group of wine-growers at Unindustria Treviso, and Valerio Cescon, responsible for the food and agriculture sector at Confcooperative Treviso.

The establishment of this consortium has been possible thanks to the commitment from producers, and has the potential of becoming one of the most important in Italy - the new president Brunetta explains.

From this moment on, the operators of this sector from nine Italian provinces will have the possibility to enrol at the consortium, which allows them to enhance the value of their production.

This is a remarkable period for Prosecco and its entire industry - comments Federico Tessari, president of Unioncamere Veneto: it was given the DOCG designation in summer and now it also has a Consortium protecting its DOC variety.

These achievements open up unprecedented business opportunities for both the traders of this sector and the territory, and increase the brand-awareness of this product of excellence on international markets.

However, the most important challenge begins here, since we will have to be able to consolidate our advantage by showing we deserve our achievements. The first meetings are already scheduled for the coming days.
