IGT Grape Certification - The Harvesting

With the decree of the 21st November 1995 it happened the recognition of the local marks of origin “ALTO LIVENZA”, “COLLI TREVIGIANI”, “DELLE VENEZIE”, “MARCA TREVIGIANA”, “VENETO”, “VENETO ORIENTALE” for wines produced in the territory of Veneto region and whoever produces, sells or distributes for consumption wines with this kind of indication is compelled by law to observe conditions and requirements established in the correspondent specifications of production.

According to statistical data concerning declarations of IGT grape harvesting of 2002 it is possible to observe that in the IGT area of ALTO LIVENZA, on a total area of 216.296 square metres, the 34% of the territory is given over to the cultivation of Verduzzo vine, the 27% is given over to the cultivation of Cabernet franc, the 16% to the cultivation of Pinot Bianco and the 11% to the cultivation of Merlot.

Considering instead the total production of Alto Livenza it can be noted that the total production of 132.230 kg consists for the 32,90% of Cabernet Franc, the 20,26% of Verduzzo, the 20% of Pinot Bianco and the 16,24% of Merlot. From these data it can be deduced that, in the area of Alto Livenza, also if the Verduzzo cultivation area is the largest one (34%), the Verduzzo is not the most produced vine, instead this is the case of Cabernet Franc.

Analyzing the IGT area of COLLI TREVIGIANI, on a total area of 16.876.865 square metres, the Prosecco vine is conspicuous among the others because it occupies the 80% of the cultivated area; it is followed with almost insignificant percentages by Chardonnay with the 4,7%, by Merlot with the 2,7%, by Pinot Bianco with the 2,11%, by Incrocio Manzoni 6.0.13 with the 1,7%, by Cabernet with the 1,4% and by Verdiso with the 1,2%.

Considering instead the 24.628.886 kg of total production it can be noted again that Prosecco is conspicuous among all the others with the 86% of total production (occupying the 80% of the cultivated area), then there is Chardonnay with the 3,1% of production, Merlot with the 2,1%, Pinot Bianco with the 1,4%, Cabernet Sauvignon with the 1,3%, Verdiso with the 1%, Incrocio Manzoni 6.0.13 with the 0,9% and Cabernet with the 0,58%, which is clearly more produced in the Alto Livenza area.

In the IGT territory of VENEZIE on a total area of 4.121.074 square metres Pinot Grigio vine occupies the 32,6% of the cultivated area and Merlot vine the 28,7%, then there is Cabernet Sauvignon vine with the 10% and Chardonnay vine with the 7,6%.

Analyzing instead the production, it can be noted that in these territories it has higher rates, also if with little difference, than the cultivated area rates. The total production of 5.386.426 kg consists for the 34% of Pinot Grigio, for the 29% of Merlot, for the 11% of Cabernet Sauvignon and for the 8,40% of Cabernet.

In the IGT territory of MARCA TREVIGIANA there are 36 different vines and on a total area of 90.372.648 square metres Merlot vine occupies the 26,37% of the cultivated area, Prosecco vine the 16%, Cabernet Sauvignon the 8,46% and Verduzzo the 8,3%, Pinot Grigio the 6,9%, Pinot Bianco the 6,4%, Chardonnay the 5,9%, Cabernet Frank the 5,7%, Bianco the 3,6% and Raboso the 1,9%. These are the chief vines of the IGT area of Marca Trevigiana.

Regarding the production, it can be noted that on a total production of 127.196.066 kg the main production is that of Merlot wine with the 26,13%, followed by Prosecco wine with the 20%, Verduzzo with the 9,3%, Cabernet Sauvignon with the 8,1%, Pinot Grigio with the 7,24%, Chardonnay with the 5,79%, Pinot Bianco with the 5,5%, Cabernet Franc with the 4,5%, Bianco with the 3,66% and Raboso with the 1,9%.

As for the IGT territory of VENETO, on a total area of 41.825.125 square metres, the vine with the largest cultivated area is Merlot with the 18%, followed by Verduzzo with the 11,39%, Pinot Grigio with the 9%, Cabernet Franc with the 8,8%, Prosecco with the 8,3%, Chardonnay with the 7,09%, Pinot Bianco with the 6,5%, Raboso with the 3,6% and Sauvignon with the 2,4%.

Briefly analyzing the production it can be noted that the first place is occupied by Merlot with the 18% of total production, rate slightly higher than the cultivated area rate of this vine, the second place is occupied by Verduzzo with the 12%, the third place is occupied by Prosecco with the 11,78%, followed by Pinot Grigio with the 9,64%, Cabernet Sauvignon with the 7,79%, Cabernet Franc with the 7,55%, Chardonnay with the 7%, Pinot Bianco with the 6,4%, Raboso with the 3,7%, Sauvignon with the 1,7%.

Concerning the last IGT territory called VENETO ORIENTALE, on a total area of 563.543 square metres the 22% is used for the cultivation of Pinot Grigio vine, the 14% for the cultivation of the Franconia vine, the 11,4% for Verduzzo vine, the 10% for Sauvignon vine, the 8,5% for Cabernet Franc vine and the 4,6% for Merlot vine. Analyzing instead the production in this territory it can be noted that on a total production of 479.462 kg the first place is not occupied by Pinot Grigio, also if its cultivated area rate is the highest one, but by Verduzzo with the 13% of the production. It is followed by Pinot Grigio with the 11,09%, Cabernet Franc with the 10,86%, Merlot with the 10,52%, Sauvignon with the 10,25% and Franconia with the 10%.

From these data it can be deduced that the production rate of some wines varies according to different areas. Some kinds of wines are not even present in all areas, but their concentration rate permits them to have a high production rate also in the region.

In the undermentioned table there are five IGT wines that, as regards the total area of Veneto of 153.975.551 square metres and the total production of kg 217.781.421, have the highest rates of cultivated areas and of production.
